In May of 2016, Yukon College is very excited to graduate our first class of students who have completed the Yukon First Nations Core Competency as a part of their studies. The class of 2016 will be the first graduates to enjoy a credential that includes this award winning initiative! At Yukon College, Yukon First Nations Core Competency means possessing a broad understanding of six key aspects of Yukon First Nations: history, heritage and culture, governance, residential schools, contemporary topics and world views.  This is very important because a greater understanding and awareness of Yukon First Nations history, culture and journey towards self-determination will help to build positive relationships among all Yukon citizens.

All students who expect to graduate in 2016 or later, and who started their diploma programs in 2014, were enrolled in degree programs in 2014, or who started certificate programs in 2015 are required to complete the First Nations Core Competency requirement.  This can be done in one of four ways:

1.Students might meet this requirement through a credit course that they take in their regular program.  Many courses and programs have been identified with First Nations Core Competency learning outcomes embedded within them.  For students who have completed these courses/programs, there is no need to do anything further.  Courses and programs that meet the requirement can be found online athttps://yukoncollege.yk.ca/programs/pages/yfn_core_competency_knowledge/programs_and_courses_that_meet_the_core_competency.  If you are unsure if a course that you have taken meets the requirement, please make sure that you check with your Program Advisor

2.Taking the Yukon First Nations 101 single day workshop (in-person).  In some cases, program areas are organizing this for their students.  If it is available, this option is free for current students.

3.Completing the online Yukon First Nations 101 course.  For this, simply come to Admissions and Registration.  We will give you a username and password.  You sign in and complete the course on your own time.  Students will typically take about four hours to complete this online course.  This option is free for current students.

4.If you have a solid grounding in the six key aspects of Yukon First Nations, you can ask for an online challenge exam.  This option takes most students about one hour and is free for current students.

You have completed the First Nations core competency requirement by passing the credit course that has been identified as meeting the requirement (option #1), or by completing any of the other options.  Failure to pass or complete at least one of the options means that you have not met the core competency requirement, and you will not be allowed to graduate.
